Taiwan Premier unpopular with over half the public: DPP poll
http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_cont...2&lang=eng
KMT adviser calls for thorough Cabinet reshuffle

Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2010-09-07 05:28 PM

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A total of 52 percent of the public are dissatisfied with the performance of Premier Wu Den-yih on the first anniversary of his appointment, a poll by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party showed Tuesday.
Unemployment, the gap between rich and poor, and the law-and-order situation were the three themes Wu scored the highest negative ratings for, the party said.

The dissatisfaction with the Cabinet would have repercussions for the ruling Kuomintang’s performance in the November 27 mayoral elections, according to DPP opinion survey specialist Chen Chun-lin. More than 50 percent of urban residents disliked the premier’s performance, while in the Kaohsiung and Tainan areas, the figure reached more than 60 percent, Chen said.

Wu’s efforts to reduce unemployment met with a dissatisfaction rate of 58.8 percent, with 31.8 percent of respondents satisfied. A total of 68.4 percent thought Wu was not doing enough to close the gap between rich and poor, with 21.8 percent satisfied with his efforts.

The premier’s law-and-order policies were rejected by 59.4 percent of respondents and praised by 31.1 percent, the DPP said.

As to Wu’s efforts to upgrade and transform Taiwan’s business world, 43.3 percent expressed dissatisfaction while 38 percent approved.

An overwhelming 70.4 percent of poll respondents said Wu’s Cabinet leaned toward Big Business, while 15.6 percent said considerations for the average public came first.

The DPP poll also looked forward to the 2012 presidential elections with a scenario in which Wu would serve as President Ma Ying-jeou’s running mate. The current premier’s presence on the ticket would harm Ma, said 60.1 percent of the poll respondents, with only 24.6 percent saying the opposite.

Among KMT supporters, 47.1 percent said Wu would reduce Ma’s chances of re-election, while 40.5 percent said it would help the president.

The DPP conducted its poll on September 2-6 with 1,027 valid respondents and a margin of error of 3.1 percent.

Wu for the first time responded in public Tuesday to criticisms from Jaw Shaw-kong, a senior KMT campaign adviser, that Cabinet members were bad at communicating with each other and with the public, and that a reshuffle should occur before the November elections. Jaw is a co-founder of the New Party and has a long career as a politician and media personality.

Speaking on a radio show Monday, Jaw said that at least 80 percent of Cabinet members should go, reports said.

Wu responded that his ministers did have a major problem communicating and explaining their policies to the public, but emphasized that his government was clean and had played a positive role in taking the country out of the global economic crisis.

Subject: DPP Poll Finds People Unsatisfied with Premier Wu
http://www.icrt.com.tw/en/twnews.php#185
A new poll conducted by the DPP finds that just over half of the Taiwan
population is not satisfied with the job that Premier Wu Dun-yi is doing.

According to the survey, conducted a year after Wu came to office, 52 percent
of respondents say he's been doing a sub-par job.

Major areas of concern are his handling of the unemployment problem here, the
widening wealth gap, and public safety and security.

Wu's handling of specific issues, such as the recent chemical plant fires and
the controversy surrounding the central Taiwan science park expansion, have
also left voters wanting.
